One of my friend is suffering from depression and anxiety since many years. He is taking allopath medicines for which is not getting satisfactory results. We are planning to put him on yoga? Is it possible to overcome depression with yoga and pranayama? How long he is supposed to practice yoga? Is there any side effects while doing yoga and pranayama?

Doctor's Ayurvedic Advice:-

Hello,

As you are having anxiety and depression caused because of your trauma or injury. This is related to shock and that may lead to disturbance at the level of mental status. There may be one thing which will haunt you or make you to memorize one single incident and that leads to loss of sleep or this condition is called as insomnia along with depression.

You may need a set of treatments such as Shirodhara, Talapodichil, and General body massage in Ayurveda and internal medications such as Divya Saraswatharishtam, and Divya Ashwagandharistham both medicines are to be consumed in the form of combination and the dosage is 30 ml twice daily after food. At night after dinner you can take one tablet of Sumenta one with warm milk is recommended.

You may need few counseling sessions that may help you to keep you well with will power. Yoga and pranayama are found to be effective in dealing with mental trauma as well as promotion of sleep.

You can practice Vinyasa Yoga in calm room and also Sarvangasana and Surya Namaskara which are helpful along with meditation including anulomaviloma Pranayama.

Muscle twitching is fine involuntary movements in the small area of muscles. If it is present for few days and then occur at times does not indicate a major problem. But if it is associated with weakness, loss of sensation or wasting, it is due to the single neuron disease. Loss of sleep, anxiety and depression causes increase in the nerve impulses form the central nervous system or even the peripheral system. So Ayurvedic medicines can be taken to improve the sleep and reduce the depression.

Ayurvedic medicines like Divya Ashwagandharishtha, Divya Medha Vati and Brihat chagaladi ghrit - one tsp before food twice daily and can be taken for a month and then reviewed.

Ayurvedic treatments like oil massage, shirodhara, streaming oil and rice poultice are beneficial. Include milk, avocados, berries, olive oil, cinnamon, basil and garlic. Carbohydrates can be taken for natural tryptophans. Reduce excess oil, sugar, salt and cold refrigerated foods. Try to do exercises like walking or swimming or Yogasanas like Padmasana, Sukhasana, Savasana, supported Saravangasana, halasana and sirsasana which are beneficial. The exercise will help the insulin to transport the amino acid to the muscles which will increase the energy levels and promote sleep.

I have anxiety and depression problem that I have after my injury, So i have not sleep and day by day, with a pain , I can not sleep, I have the muscle twitching, can you able to consult me, about my health. I f I take sleep pills then I can sleep others wise I will be restless. thanks

My wife also has the similar case and she is suffering from severe anxiety and depression. She is under allopathy medication but I am looking for some ayurvedic medicines. So, it would be nice if you can give me the exact name of medicines and how can I order them.

I, Sarit Sanyal will remain greatful to you. By your blessings and grace I got permanent relief from mental disorder. In 1996, my family consulted a psychiatrist for my mental problem, who wrongly diagnosed and treated my problem as schizophrenia. After that (almost 1 year) I got married but there was no end of my problem. I was under this treatment for almost 11 years (from 1996 to may 2007). Several times I tried to convince my family members that schizophrenia is not my problem but they were not ready to accept.

Lastly I consulted another psychiatrist on phone in December, 2007. When I explained my problem to him on phone he told me to meet him personally and also suggested that the way I am talking to him indicates that I don’t have such problem. Then I personally consulted him and he advised me to go through the E.E.G. and psychometric test. Next day on the basis of my tests results and clinical diagnosis (both) he confirmed that I am not suffering from schizophrenia, but my actual problem is depression and mental disorder. He further advised for the prolonged treatment and accordingly I started taking allopathic medicines as per his prescription. I took these medicines from December 2007 till August, 2008 and got positive response. In September., 2008, I went to your Patanjali Yog Kendra in Indore and consulted a Vaid ji over there. As per his advice I started taking ayurvedic medicines along with regular practice of Pranayam

I started practicing Kapal Bhati, Anulom- Vilom ( both 20 -25 minutes each) and other pranayams.I am totally on ayurvedic medicines for last three months. When I stopped taking allopathic medicines, I was afraid of sleepless nights and uncontrolled anger. But it was all my imaginations. Now I am completely healthy and can sleep whenever I feel like. Now I have got control on my temper and my life has become smooth and full of happiness. It’s all because of your grace and kindness.

Yoga for stress and depression

Psychological problems like depression, anxiety, stress are well treated by alternative therapies. Yoga and pranayama are important for the same complaint.

To keep the mind in stable status, one can practice yoga and pranayama regularly which gives very good results and proven effective.

There are certain yoga postures which stimulates sensory organs and central nervous system which can be done along with other therapies.

It is clear that depression medicines cause side effects like irregularities in menstruation in females and loss of libido in males and other complaints.

Yoga postures like

• Surya Namaskara

• Halasana

• Vajrasana

• Sarvangasana

• Shavasana

• Matsyasana

Pranayama like anuloma-viloma pranayama, and Shitali pranayama, and Shitkari pranayama are useful. Yoganidra is also very helpful.

As yoga poses and pranayama are very beneficial to concentrate on work and helps to tackle mood swings.

After doing pranayama one can find calmness and harmony in mind which helps to judge the reality and helps to avoid unwanted depression and stress as a result without medicines also one can find a result accordingly.

As yoga postures are very helpful to detoxify the whole system and helps to maintain physical fitness of the body resulting activeness of the body as depression patients do suffer from laziness.

One can practice yoga and pranayama regularly to get rid from depression and anxiety. Yoga poses can be practiced under supervision of trainer and can do properly as long as possible.
